2006 Cirrus SR22 G2 - Avionics Updates
Updating the Avionics Databases
Prerequisites
- Two (2) USB flash drives, each formatted as an MSDOS FAT16 2 GB partition. The first flash drive will be used to update the MFD databases. The second flash drive will be used to update the Jeppesen charts. Do not store both MFD updates and charts on the same flash drive. Additional details are on page 3 of the Avidyne MFD Data Update Guide.
- Two (2) USB flash drives, MSDOS FAT32 from 1 to 16 GB partition. Additional details are on page 123 of the Avidyne IFD440 Installation Manual.
- A copy of the JDM (Jeppesen Distribution Manager) Mac or Windows app, available here. There is a mobile version, but a Bad Wombat device is required.
- Credentials for N927SF's Jeppesen subscription. Contact me if you need them.
Procedure
- Launch the JDMApp and log in.
- Wait for the background refresh to complete.
- If there are two cycles available (current and upcoming) then they'll be color-coded as amber and green. For the required cycle,
- Insert the MFD update flash drive and wait for the OS to recognize it.
- Download and transfer the "Avidyne EX5000, EX600, EX500 - NavData". I download and transfer as separate steps. The process is brittle and I stick with what works.
- Once the data is transferred to the flash drive, eject it using the operating system's relevant procedure.
- Insert the Charts update flash drive and wait for the OS to recognize it.
- Download and transfer the "Avidyne EX5000, EX600, EX500 - Electronic Charts".
- Once the data is transferred to the flash drive, eject it using the operating system's relevant procedure.
- Insert the first of two IFD440 Update flash drives and wait for the OS to recognize it.
- Download and transfer the "Avidyne IFD 400 Series, Bendix King AeroNav Series - NavData" and the "Avidyne IFD 400 Series, Bendix King AeroNav Series - Obstacles". Both NavData and Obstacles can be saved on a single flash drive.
- Once the data is transferred to the flash drive, eject it using the operating system's relevant procedure.
- Repeat the NavData and Obstacles download and transfer using the second of the two IFD440 update flash drives.
As long as the aircraft has more than 23.5 volts on BAT2 and BAT1, the updates can be performed without ground power and without starting.
- Insert the MFD update flash drive into the MFD's USB port.
- Insert one IFD440 update flash drive in each IFD440's USB port.
- Turn on BAT2, BAT1, and AVIONICS.
- The IFD440s will read the USB flash drives; follow the prompts to select NavData and Obstacles, then PROCEED. When finished, press DONE.
- The MFD will display a prompt and label an LSK as PROCEED. Ensure the update completes successfully.
- When the MFD update is complete, remove the MFD update flash drive and insert the Charts update flash drive.
- Proceed through the startup screens, then select the Aux page, and press-and-hold left LSK1 and LSK3. "Restart" will appear on a right-side LSK. Select it.
- When the MFD restarts, the Charts update will proceed. This process is considerably longer than the MFD and IFD updates but typically finishes in 3 or 4 minutes.
- Remove the Charts update flash drive.
- Turn off AVIONICS, BAT1, and BAT2.
- On the next power-up, verify the dates for the MFD data, Charts, and IFD data. If you have pre-installed an upcoming cycle, you'll need to touch an additional PROCEED prompt.
Troubleshooting
Occasionally, the MFD update will fail with a "data corruption" message or a Windows NT 4.0 error dialog. If MFD updates fail, then all airspace, airport, obstacle, and other data will already have been wiped in preparation for update, and the MFD will display a terrain and road map. Flight plans and navigational guidance from the IFD 440s will continue to be displayed. In the event of a failed update, it's necessary to reset the download counter and repeat the download/install process.
